According to historical artisans, this technique originated during the Ming Dynasty and reached its peak in the Qing Dynasty. Unfortunately, very few original works have survived to the present day.

The primary materials used in silk twining flowers include silk thread, cardboard, and metal wire (iron or copper). The metal wire forms the structural framework of the piece, the cardboard creates the body and volume, and the silk thread serves as the outer layer, giving the flower its refined texture and color.

Because the overall form is guided by the shape of the cardboard, silk twining flowers share artistic connections with traditional paper cutting, paper carving, and embroidery techniques.
