About the Craft

Silk Twining Flowers

As the name suggests, silk twining flowers are created by winding silk threads of various colors around shaped cardboard, forming intricate floral designs. According to artisans, this art form dates back to the Ming Dynasty and flourished in the Qing Dynasty, though very few original works have survived. After the liberation of China, the craft experienced a brief revival, but the remaining collections are still rare today.

The primary materials are silk thread, cardboard, and metal wire (iron or copper). The wire serves as the skeleton of the design, the cardboard shapes the structure, and the silk thread brings the surface to life with color and texture.

Because the design is largely determined by the cardboard cutouts, silk twining flowers are often associated with traditional arts like paper cutting, paper carving, and embroidery.
